It works because over time a domain has been built up - A mixture of time, money and know-how have been ploughed into it – and it draws in a good amount of traffic. But now, for whatever reason, that domain has expired. Where once there may have been a thriving website pulling income in from various sources, it no longer exists. Search engine traffic can sometimes account for more than 80% of traffic to a website. Imagine being able to re-register an expired name that was receiving hundreds of visits daily from the search engines. Some website owners work hard developing a site and promoting it only to neglect it in the pursuing months. Either they lost interest or unfortunately they may have be unable to register the name and/or maintain their site due to unexpected circumstances.

Search engine traffic can be a great source of website traffic, however, it’s not as solid as type-in traffic. This is due to the ranking search engines place on websites which is based on their own proprietary system. A domain name could be receiving traffic because it was placed in the top 10 listings of a particular search then expired and not leads to the dreaded “404 page not found” screen. However, its very likely that since the content of the original website is no longer there the placement of that domain will change once they search engine updates their rankings. Nonetheless, it can still be a very easy and targetted source of traffic.

Misspellings of popular generic terms are also a form of browser type-ins. The only difference is that online surfers probably do not intend to type the domain name as a typo.

An example of this would be anscestry as opposed to ancestry. Which one is correct? Well according to our traffic log there is a small percentage of surfers that believe anscestry is the correct way to spell ancestry. Although their intention is for ancestry.com they end up at anscestry.com which is still targeted traffic to anything related to ancestry.

Domain Type In Traffic

Browser type-ins are domains that are “type-in” directly into the browser’s address location bar. These are usually generic terms such as autos, business, loans. So their domain name equivalent naturally would be autos.com, business.com and loans.com.

Many online surfers bypass the search engines and directly type in autos.com when they search for information on autos online. The visitor to sales ratio is higher for these websites as opposed to websites that receive their traffic by other means which makes them highly desirable.

Why Domains are so vital to your online presence
To establish a successful business online it is necessary for a “location” to allow your website to be easily found. Just as for brick and mortar establishments the location of a business can make or break its success.

Imagine wanting to open up your own fast food restaurant in the desert of arizona where every other house is no closer than 10 miles apart. I highly doubt you’ll get many people to your restaurant because very few will know you are there.

Your domain name is your location that will be used to market and brand your internet identity. It can be used to brand and market brick and mortar establishents as well.

Depending on what you sell, a high priced product can convert into hundreds of dollars in profit.

If you could snatch up a great domain name that receives 10 targeted visitors to your website would it be worth it?

Lets assume the following:

• cost of domain name is $10/year or less
• the domain name you register is www.blablaproducts.com
• you are selling bla bla for $39.95 and receive $25 net profit from each sale
• your visitor to sales ratio is 300:1
• www.blablaproducts.com gets 10 targetted visits a day

Lets calculate how much is visitor is worth:

• 10 visitors a day = 300 visitors a month
• your visitor to sales ratio is 300:1 so in that first month you make one sale
• you make $25 profit on your bla bla product
• so already you’re up $15 ($25profit - $10domaincost) on the investment of your domain name
• each visitor would be worth about $.083 ($25/300visitors) to your business

Conclusion: good domain name = good business strategy
